hr2 Geistliche Musik

Print

Geistliche Musik is a Sunday morning (6-8 am, German time) sacred music block on hr2, the "kultur" network of Hessian Radio (external link), headquartered in Frankfurt. Complete with news and weather, it will typically begin with a fine recording of church bells from a different church in the region each Sunday, followed by a nice mix of choral and organ recordings. The obligatory Bach cantata of the day comes in after the 7 am news.

The overall range of recordings is just amazing, with pretty detailed commentary. Plenty of recordings of French repertoire on Cavaille-Coll? instruments, Italilan, English, German, Spanish... you name it! Some pretty savvy editors and selectors here.

hr got back on my personal radar while attending a fine concert of the hr-Sinfonieorchester in June 2007. Continuing the tradition of Germany leading the way in audio technology, they actually make some of their live broadcasts available in Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound (via satellite dish and the proper decoder box).
